About Itter
The snow-capped Hohen Salve is the impressive centrepiece of this manificent ski region, which includes about 250 km of pistes and over 100 lifts.
The nine resorts with direct connection to lifts in the ski area vary from peacfull family-friendly and cosy to lively après ski.
Breathtaking is the scenery of the Wilder Kaiser, whose imposing rock cliffs form an exciting contrast to the ski area, which is located around the Hohe Salve with its neighbouring mountains of Zinsberg, Eiberg, Brandstadl, Hartkaiser, and Astberg. The ski area is a delightful snowy wonderland with a seamless network of lifts and runs, except the corresponding ski area of Kelchsau, which is somewhat set apart. Going, Ellmau, Scheffau, Söll, Itter, Hopfgarten, and Brixen in Thale are the entryways into the central part of the ski area around the Hohe Salve, where capable lifts ensure a smooth ascent. A connecting lift makes the connection to the neighbouring Westendorf ski area. The ski locations are accessible, even familiar; the amount of available pistes is enormous, but more geared toward average skiers or families with children.
Pistes
The entire ridge between Astberg and Hoher Salve is connected with a network of modern lifts and diverse pistes. Here in the centre of the ski area alone, about 200 km of pistes are prepared daily. And if that's not enough, you can ski further over Westendorf and change over to the Kitzbühler Ski Area, where you can take the lifts all the way to Hollersbach in Pinzgau. At the western end of the ski area, the snowy cap of the Hohen Salve (1828 m) reigns over the far-running and gently rolling range. One of the most miraculous panorama mountains of Austria and a perfect ski mountain with easy practice runs in Hochsöll, evenly inclined pleasure pistes at the Keatbahn, sun-flooded valleys below the Rigi, steep descents from the peak to the north and south, as well as moguls and variants just apart. Via Hochbrixen, the connection is made to the eastern part of the ski area, where you will find Brandstadl, Hartkaiser, and Astberg. Pleasure skiers take their time, lingering on the northern slopes at Auhochalm and at Eiberg; sports fanatics go further to ski a long route at Moderer or to Ellmau to visit the Intersport-Kaiser Park at the dance floor lift. As beautiful as the pistes in the upper part of the ski area may be, the valley runs are not to be missed. In addition to the wonderful descents toward Brixen, Scheffau, and Ellmau, it's worth a visit to the varied pistes toward Itter. If you start at the Hohen Salve, you'll conquer 1100 m of elevation. And thanks to the man-made snow, you can swing all the way into the valley, while elsewhere the first flowers may be starting to bloom. Brixen in Thale is the intersection of the central part of the ski area with the Westendorfer Ski Area, which reaches from the impressive white crest of the Choralpe over Fleiding and Gampenkogel into the Spertenthal, where it meets with the Kitzbüheler ski area. The steep, bumpy peak slope of the Choralpe is a real challenge, as is the Boarders' Playground (www.boardplay.com) at the Gampenkogelbahn. More relaxed are the lovely runs between Gampen and Fleiding, at the Fleidingalm or right in Kelchsau. Kelchsau is in a quiet tributary valley, far away from the ski carousel. For the four lifts and 16 km easy to intermediate pistes, a reduced-price lift pass is available.
Cross Country
A widely-branching network of cross country trails stretches north and south of the ski area into wide, sun-spoiled valleys. Additionally, the trails all come together in a little stretch near Itter. Particularly beautiful are the stretches from Brixen to Westendorf, at Ellmau, and in Kelchsau.
